Historians, ex-inmates and descendants of prisoners commemorate and discuss the New Mexican WWII internment camps at Lordsburg and Santa Fe on Saturday and Sunday, April 21 and 22, 2012. The symposium, "From inside and outside the barbed wire," was held at the Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Historian Dr. Richard A Melzer reads a list of ten adjectives he concocted to describe inmates of the Santa Fe Internment Camp.

Dr. Gail Okawa presents a spoken word portrayal of local Santa Fean's memories of the prison camp.

Carol Robertson Lopez, former Santa Fe City Councilor, remembers the difficult decision she faced prior to casting the vote that led to the approval to construct the historical marker.

Gerard Martinez y Valencia, former director of Intercultural Affairs for the city of Santa Fe, describes his role in mediating the divide between the internment camp marker proponents and a group of Bataan Death March survivors.

Bill Nishimura enjoys the fine weather on his second visit to the historical marker.

Descendants of prisoners and local Santa Feans engage in discussion near the marker.

Amateur historian, Brian Minami, poses with the pros: Lordsburg historian, Mollie Pressler and Santa Fe historian Nancy Bartlit.

Placing flowers in remembrance

Bill Nishimura remembers watching Santa Fean women riding the equestrian trail behind the camp: "Oh my gosh, that was really something!"

Nancy Bartlit brought Nishimura back to Santa Fe for the first time since World War II to attend the historical marker dedication in 2002.

Mollie Pressler, Lordsburg's resident historian and self-proclaimed L.O.L.O.L (Little old lady of Lordsburg) recalls the issei efforts to gain better treatment by asserting their rights under the Geneva Convention.

As Gail Okawa, right, closed the symposium, Nishimura remembered two final stories. Okawa granted him more time while a Santa Fean in the audience yelled, "Go Bill!"
